House Bill 1523 Creates Controversy

On Tuesday,

Republican governor, Phil Bryant signed into law the Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act, also known as House Bill 1523.
Under this new law, people can deny LGBT people marriage, adoption, employment, and service if it goes against ones religious beliefs.
The supporters of the controversial law say that it protects people’s religious freedom. The laws opposition claims that it is discriminatory, and is looking to get it overturned.
A similar bill has also been signed in North Carolina by Republican governor Pat McCrory.
Many celebrities have come out in opposition of the law, including Ellen Degeneres and Bruce Springsteen stating that it is unconstitutional.
